Oak wood | Team cooperation project | 2025

Obnova

As one of the leading solid-oak furniture manufacturers in the Balkans,

GIR produces high-quality furniture rooted in craftsmanship but its pro-

duction process generates valuable wood residue that often remains

unused. In response, GIR challenged participants of a Design Residency

Program for young designers in Belgrade to create a solution that repur-

poses this residue oak material in a meaningful way, aligning with the

company’s values of sustainability, functionality, and design excellence.

Obnova is a modular element that transforms parts of GIR‘s industrial residue into a

purposeful, elegant solution for modern urban gardening. Its self-assembly structure

allows for small packaging, and easy at-home construction, creating an atmosphere

of well-being in any indoor space. The organic form picks up on the forests characte-

ristic of Serbia. The structure is made up of three bent legs made from wooden slats

and a centerpiece consisting of three wooden blocks that allow for different sizes of

pots, depending on the position. Residue oat blocks from GIR’s furniture production

are used to make the dowels which result in a playful detail. The modules can sta-

cked with dowels and combined in different ways, allowing the user to customise the

arrangement to their space. The wood is doublecoated with the foodsafe finish that

GIR uses for their furniture. The residue bark and ashes are reused as a fertilizer for

plants, allowing new life to grow.
