Palace of thoughts
Wood & acrylic glas | Team project | 2022
A new, sustainable set was sought for the German public television pro-
gramme ‘Wissen vor acht – Zukunft’ which explains futuristic develop-
ments and findings in a brief format. The path to a sustainable future
requires new approaches to it and therefore a lot of imagination and
creativity. If you have an idea of the future, you can actively contribute to
its realisation and shape it. The future is thus born in the mind.
The brain stores images of memories and experiences. When it plans for
the future, it recombines individual fragments of these images. In the
set, these images of the future which are overlapping of thoughts are
depicted as semi-transparent panels of acrylic glass, which are attached
to three large frames that reuse material from the old set. The frames are
fitted with dowels at the sides so that they can be inserted into each ot-
her and the individual panels can rotate. The staggered back walls offer
the option of entering or exiting the set. The truthfulness of the images
of the future is limited and never predictable and completely transparent,
which is why the panels in the set are slightly frosted. This also prevents
possible light reflections and glare, and scratches are not noticeable.
Changes in perspective can lead to a change in the overlay patterns and
thus create new trains of thought, which is also simulated in the set du-
ring the tracking shot.
